Writing Types (06 Types with instructions) – ultimate guide

Writing types provide information to the students about the employment of technique by the writers in their work. 06 types of writing with examples have been discussed in this article.

Writing Types:

The writing skill, which is given much attention in our education institution still requires to be developed through modern strategies offered by the Applied linguistics. Poor results in examinations show not only superficial knowledge of the students but also their short comings in the use of writing skills. Here we shall discuss some writing types through which students will be able to develop the good understanding about writing techniques.

Let’s start with writing types:

Free Writing:

In writing types, the first type is free writing. During this stage, students are supposed to write largely from their own linguistic resources, and receive further guidance from the teacher as a feed-back. This stage shows the writing skills of the students almost developed through controlled and guided writings. They are now able to compose paragraphs and write essays by following the steps given below:

  1. Read the topic/statement on which the essay has to be written, and find out keywords and topic words.
  2. Make an outline for writing an essay. The outline may reflect the structure of essay:
  • Introduction;
  • Development, and
  • Conclusion
  1. Write the first draft of the essay. There may be some errors related to grammar, inconsistency of thought, organizing the structure of essay, punctuation mistakes etc.
  2. Revise the first draft of the essay, correcting the mistakes and errors.

Controlled Writing

The second category in writing types is controlled writing. In this stage, the teacher designs activities much easier for the students who just begin to write. Such activities can be divided into substitution table exercises and copying activities.

Substitution tables can be designed in a more challenging way:

The students may form sentences such as:

  1. My friend often plays in the evening.
  2. My friend often plays on Sunday.
  3. My friend often plays in spare time.
  4. My cousin sometimes plays in the evening.
  5. My cousin sometimes reads at 8: p.m.

By substituted the subjects and predicates as given in the table a sentence-pattern practice can enable the students to write sentences in the correct manner.

          The sentences may be contracted such as:

Locus didn’t go to the stadium because he had another appointment.

Guided Writing:

In this stage, the students are guided by the teacher to do more demanding exercises such as:

  1. Completion items
  2. Reproduction exercises
  3. Transformation activities
  4. Summarising the given texts
  5. Expansion tasks

Narrative Writing:

A narrative ;is an orderly, continuous account of the successive particulars of an event or transaction or of a series of events. It is an account of a sequence of events. The art of narrative writing therefore, is the art of telling a story.

Examples of Narratives:

Biography; History; Realistic Fiction; Romantic Fiction; Allegory; Fable; Parable etc.

Characteristics of Narratives:

  1. Narratives give information.
  2. They give amusement and entertainment.
  3. They teach a lesson or illustrate a point.

Descriptive Writing:

Descriptive writing paints mental images in the mind of the reader. The way, a writer makes his reader visualize a particular thing, is by describing in lively manner, what he observes or experiences. The steps which are mostly followed while describing anything:

  1. Observe it closely and accurately.
  2. Select only significant details.
  3. Arrange these details in an appropriate way to develop mental pictures.
  4. Choose precise and suitable words to make vivid and impressive pictures.

Expository Writing:

Expository writing or expository essays explain a thing with arguments and try to establish the point of view of the writer after discussing different aspects of the subjects. Views both for an against the proposition should be discussed and a clear conclusion should be arrive at.
